If you’re thinking of moving to Uruguay and opening a hostel, here’s an opportunity for you.
Some friends of mine have their hostel in Montevideo, Uruguay for sale.
This hostel is fully functioning, and currently in business.
It’s located in the Centro neighborhood of Montevideo, which is near the tourist areas like Ciudad Vieja and the Mercado del Puerto. Centro is a busy shopping area, and a convenient place to get buses anywhere someone may want to go in Montevideo.
The hostel is 279m2 (3000 square feet), has 11 rooms, 3 bathrooms, a fitness room, and a roof terrace. It’s already wired with cable TV in all the rooms and has WiFi Internet set up.
The building also keeps many of the original architectural features. In my youth, I wanted to be architect. One of the things I really liked about Montevideo was the buildings. The huge doorways, the marble used throughout many older buildings, the stained glass, and the high ceilings. This building has all that.
They spent two years refurbishing the building. It used to be the kind of place that you’d feel sad to enter. Now, it’s bright, colorful, cheerful, and welcoming.
Of course, the improvements in the looks of the hostel aren’t a surprise to me. One of the owners is an artist, and I have one of her paintings in my bedroom right now.
If you plan to open a business after you move overseas, you may find the process of getting the building prepared to be very frustrating. One expat started preparing a building for a business, only to be told by the city he couldn’t open it. Another expat I know had a huge amount of trouble just getting running water into his place.
Buying an already running business can be a great way to skip all those start-up problems and headaches.

Hello, I just read your ad and am looking to buy a hostel somewhere in South America. I currently live in Panama but originally from France. Could you please send me more information on this hostel ( number of beds, income, expenses, etc…), I would appreciate it. I am to assume the sales price includes the property, right? Thanks in advance. Frederic.
Hi Frederic,
To get the information on the hostel, you can contact the realtor. I don’t have all the details. There are more pictures, and some additional information at http://www.cascoantiguopropiedades.com/en/propiedades/excelente-hostal-en-funcionamiento-en-el-centro-de-montevideo/. You can also send the realtor additional questions through their contact form.
