How Long Does It Take To Get An FBI Background Check?

by Scott Lilly on September 13, 2011

If you’re a US citizen applying for permanent residency in another country, you’ll probably need to get an FBI background check.  Unfortunately, the process is a bit of a black hole – you send off your fingerprints and wait, never knowing when you’ll get the results or if there’s a problem.

I recently applied for permanent residency in Paraguay, and detailed the steps to get your FBI background check done while living overseas.  I found out today that the results were sent back to the person in the US who is taking care of some of my paperwork.

So, for me, it took 78 days to get my FBI background check results returned.  That’s starting from the day when I sent the fingerprint card and FBI authorization letters out from Asuncion.  They were stuck in Argentina for a few days, at the FedEx center for some unknown reason.

Now they’ll be sent to the Paraguayan Consulate for legalization, and then they’ll be sent to my residency assistant here in Paraguay.

I hope that it won’t take much longer to get my cedula here, once the background check arrives.  A friend of mine got his in roughly 5 to 6 months.  Without the cedula, I was concerned about a potential trip back home that I’ve been planning.
